Homemade Taco Seasoning

Homemade Taco Seasoning

I've been buying those taco seasoning packets to make tacos for years.  Even though I buy the reduced salt version, I'm sure it still contains way too much salt as well as all kinds of other mystery ingredients that I don't need to be eating.  So I decided I'd try something different and make my own homemade taco seasoning.  I found several pins on Pinterest for homemade taco seasoning and I decided to combine all of the recipes I found to make one master mix. The result was pretty good!  Certainly less salt, but the heat from the chili flakes made up for that and kept the tacos from being bland.  I didn't think this taco mix made our tacos too spicy, but you can always reduce the amount of chili flakes you use.  I'm not entirely sure if making your own taco seasoning is a cheaper or more economical solution to buying the seasoning packets since buying spices can be expensive.  Luckily, I already had all these spices so I didn't have to spend a small fortune.  Even if this homemade taco seasoning isn't less expensive, it still probably has less salt and I know exactly what went into my seasoning mix (no mystery ingredients or things I can't pronounce!)

Homemade Taco Seasoning

Up your taco game with this custom blend of spices.
prep time: 5 MINScook time: total time: 5 mins

ingredients:

  • 2 Tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon corn starch
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes

instructions

  1. Mix all the spices together in a small bowl. Store in an air tight container.
  2. To make tacos, just brown one pound of ground beef and add this seasoning mix with 3/4 cup of water.

If using the mix later, store it in an airtight container.  I used an empty spice bottle which worked perfectly!

  15. I love our homemade taco seasoning mix. I make it up in big batches to fill a half-pint jar and then it's ready to use in whatever recipes I want it for. I use it for more than tacos... I add it to tomato sauce for enchilladas or for pizza sauce and homemade chili I add some oregano.and basil along with the spice mix.
