Elner Shimfissle really wasn't supposed to be on that ladder in the first place. Her family had asked her many times not to and they always worried about her living alone at her elderly age. Elner just wanted to pick some figs for her neighbor and certainly wasn't expecting to find a wasp nest in her fig tree. That unpleasant surprise caused her to fall off the ladder, sends her to the hospital, and has an affect on the entire town.
Elner, good natured and talkative, meets all kinds of people while she's in the hospital after her fall; many of them are people she would never have expected to see. Fannie Flag is a master story teller whose characters are exceptionally realistic such as Norma, Elner's high strung and nervous niece who worries about everything, Luther the truck driver who Elner has known since he was a boy and who is trying to turn his life around, and Tot the tell-it-like-it-is hairdresser.
Fun and enjoyable, Can't Wait To Get To Heaven by Fannie Flagg is a story of the joy found in a life well lived filled with family and friends.
