Here's what I've been up to this week:

And.. . .

You might have noticed I haven't been posting as many projects as I usually do each week.  It has been a perfect storm of crazy at The Pin Junkie household during the last few weeks.  It started with me getting a job!  Even though I'm really happy to be working again, it's a full time job and it certainly leaves me significantly less time for blogging!  At the same time I got a job, my computer went a little buggy.  Thanks to Mr. Pin Junkie, it's working normally again, but in the midst of writing end of semester papers and preparing for finals, Pin Junkie Jr. dropped his computer!  It's completely broken and beyond repair so he has been using my computer to do his school work.  Which means even less time for me to compose blog posts and to respond to comments and emails.  Finals will be over soon, I'm sure I'll find some balance between working and blogging, and Mr. Pin Junkie is even talking about helping me shop for a new computer.  (My current one is ten years old and Mr. Pin Junkie is tired of fixing it all the time!) So thanks for being patient while I try to get things back to normal.  I really appreciate everyone who stops by to read and leave a comment.  (I am reading them!)  I just love connecting with people who love Pinterest as much as I do!

How To Use Rich Pins on Pinterest

How To Use Rich Pins on Pinterest
How To Use Pinterest Rich Pins

Got questions about rich pins?  You've come to the right place!  This guide on how to use rich pins on Pinterest will help you understand what rich pins are, how they can help your blog or business, and how to get them on your Pinterest account!

What are rich pins?

Pinterest is made up of images or "pins."  Rich pins are pins that are enhanced with extra details and more information than regular pins.  There are six types of rich pins:  product, recipe, article, movie, place, and apps.

- Product rich pins give information about a product's price, availability, and where to buy.
- Recipe rich pins show ingredients, serving sizes, and more.
- Article rich pins provide post titles and descriptions.
- Movie rich pins include rating information, cast members, and reviews.
- Place rich pins show a map, address, and phone number for a particular location.
- App rich pins include an install button to instantly download an app right from Pinterest.

You can only use one type of rich pin at a time so think carefully about which one you choose to use.  I've had people ask me about the difference between product and article pins and how they should be used. Product pins are for items you are selling directly from your site (your blog, your Etsy store, etc.)  Article pins are for pages that have original content or tell a story; this includes blog pages.

Most of the posts on my blog are articles or tutorials, so I've decided to use article rich pins.  They look like this:

How To Use Rich Pins on Pinterest

That means images pinned from my recipe posts are also formatted as article pins and don't show everything that a recipe rich pin would show.  (That's ok because that extra data embedded in the rich pin is still helping in keyword searches!)  If you're a food blogger and only post recipes on you blog, then you would want to use the recipe rich pin format.

How to use rich pins on Pinterest

Why should you use rich pins?

  • Higher visibility and SEO.  Rich pins can help you with Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Since rich pins contain lots of extra info (metadata) it can be indexed and used in searches.  This data can help your pins do better in keyword searches and make your pins more visible to more people!

  • Branding.  Rich pins display your favicon.  Your logo will appear on your pins which can help distinguish your image, your brand, or your product.

  • Convenience.  Rich pins automatically update website information anytime it's changed.  If you reduce the price of a product on your website or change an ingredient on your recipe post, that information will update automatically without you having to make the change manually on Pinterest.  This can be real time saver!

  • Automatic sale alerts.   If you decrease the price of a product by more than 10% Pinterest will send a free automated email about the price drop to anyone who pinned your product. This can be a great feature to help increase sales!

  • Trusted.  In order to have rich pins, your account must be verified by Pinterest.  This proves to the Pinterest community that you are a trusted member in good standing.

  • It's Easy!  Once you have rich pins, you're done.  The process will apply to all of your previous pins and all the pins you pin in the future.

How to install rich pins?

1.  Decide which type of rich pin to use on your site.

2.  Copy the appropriate HTML code:

4.  Paste the HTML code between the <head> </head> tag on any one of your posts.

5.  Apply for rich pins by copying the URL of the page that contains the correct HTML code in the Rich Pin validator.

6.  Wait a couple of days.

7.  Once your site is validated and enabled for rich pins, your pins will show up as rich pins on Pinterest.

Israeli Couscous Salad

Israeli Couscous Salad
Israeli Couscous Salad

Have you ever tried couscous?  It's like pasta, but it's shaped into little beads.  This was my first time using Israeli couscous which is also known as pearl couscous because the beads are larger than regular couscous.  I've made couscous before - I just make the instant stuff right out of the box.  This Israeli couscous salad is so much better!  It's packed with fresh flavors and with the tomatoes, cucumber, and basil it reminds me of a combination of tabbouleh and Greek salad.

Israeli Couscous Salad

This is certainly a recipe than can be easily changed to suite your tastes by omitting or substituting ingredients.  I changed the recipe by adding extra kalmata olives because I like them so much, I purposely left out the mozzarella cheese, and I realized later I completely forgot to include the artichoke hearts and chickpeas.  Even though I didn't follow the recipe exactly, this Israeli couscous salad was a real hit at our house!

I will definitely be making it again (and hopefully I can remember to include all the ingredients!)  It's great on its own, but it would also make an excellent side dish and it would be perfect to take to a potluck.  It's so easy to make too!  The couscous cooks in about eight minutes.  While it's cooking, just chop the vegetables and then mix everything together.

I've been reading cookbooks and collecting recipes for years, but Pinterest is where I seem to find the best recipes!  Be sure to check out my other Pinterest tried and tested recipes in my recipe index.

Spinach Pesto Pasta with Chicken

Spinach Pesto Pasta with Chicken
Spinach Pesto Pasta with Chicken

How do you get your family to eat their veggies?  By making this spinach pasta with chicken recipe!

I tried to convince my family that this pasta was made with traditional pesto, but was unsuccessful.  They know me too well, as I have been known to sneak healthy ingredients into dinners before (and with varying degrees of success.)  This time, the color gave it away.  The spinach "pesto" sauce is a very bright and vibrant green, much more so than regular pesto made with basil.

This recipe didn't get a full endorsement from the entire Pin Junkie crew, but I still think it has potential.  I thought the sauce was actually really good by itself,  but somehow it seemed bland once it went on the pasta.  I'm thinking next time I'll try adding some olive oil to the recipe as well as some toasted pine nuts.  It might be really good with sun dried tomatoes too.

I did add some chicken though . . .
