Easy Update For Door Hardware

Easy Hardware Update

As part of my laundry room makeover, I updated the hardware on the doors.  I have three doors in my laundry room and each door has really ugly, brassy gold door knobs.  It can be very expensive to buy new hardware for doors, so thank you Pinterest for this great idea which is incredibly easy, affordable, and absolutely brilliant!

Step 1
Buy this paint.  It's Rust-Oleum Universal paint and primer.  There are different metallic finishes you can get.  I chose the oil rubbed bronze.  And it's less than $10.00!

Step 2
Remove the hardware from your door.  I painted everything - hinges, strike plates, and door knobs.  Put them on some cardboard outside and spray.  There isn't a lot of over spray with this paint, but you still need to protect your work area.

You can really see how ugly they are in these pictures!
Step 3
Wait for the paint to dry.  This is the hard part for me.  It dries quickly so you don't have to wait very long.

It looks better already!
Step 4
Put the hardware back on your door.

Step 5
Step back and admire your work!

This was so easy and turned out so well, I going to paint all the remaining door knobs in the house.  I'm interested to see how well the paint holds up.  If you've tried this let me know!

This is just a small part of my laundry room makeover.  I gave you a sneak peek a few weeks ago.  I will be showing you more laundry room projects throughout the week.  I'm so excited to show you the completed makeover on Thursday!  Be sure to check it out!

  4. I can't believe this...I just used Rustoleum today. Not for hardware but to paint an old bookcase I have. I am redecorating a bedroom to become a Kids Room for my grandbabies. Rustoleum is awesome. The bookcase looks great.

  5. I've been wanting to do something like this and knew there had to be a way - replacing a household of knobs can be pricey! I was just thinking today that they had to have some sort of paint that would work, but I wasn't sure how it would last. So glad I found your post at the Tasteful Tuesday link party - I'm going to have to give it a try!

  20. Hi! Was it hard taking off the hinges and putting the door back up? I definitely want to do this!

    1. No, it wasn't hard at all. All you need is a screw driver to remove the screws from the hinges.

  21. I love this idea but was worried about it wearing off, how have they held up?

    1. I was worried about the same thing. This door gets used a lot and the paint on the doorknob has held up very well.

  22. I have brass all through my house. Ugly as ever. I haven't got to the door knobs yet. I wanted you to know that I painted all of my kitchen cabinet handles with this exact paint over a year ago and it has held up great. And you know how much cabinet hardware is touched. I am doing the door knobs in my house this spring and summer. The brass looks really cheap to me. Some like it , but not this girl. Yours look great. I believe you will be surprised at how well they will hold up. I was.

  23. Can you give us an update on how they've held up? I have wanted to do this but have been concerned about the amount of use and if the paint flakes off. Thanks!

  24. Now that it has been a few months, how has it held up?

  25. I painted all the worn out brass knobs in my house. they looked great at first but now look worse than before due to the paint wearing off.. the fact that you ggrip and turn door knob vs just a toch and pull for cabinetry hardware issue it think . It was suggested that i light sand and recoat witht the original color THEN clear coat them for more durability.. Have to do something and dont want to buy all new knobs..

    1. Yes, the paint does wear with use. The door knobs I painted in a high traffic area are showing wear, but the other ones that aren't used as much look better. I haven't tried the clear coat, but it sounds like a good idea and seems like it might work.
